Adamawa Senatorial Ticket: The Federal High Court I, sitting in Yola, has declared invalid the Peoples Democratic Party’s senatorial primary for the Adamawa Central Senatorial District, which Aminu Iya-Abbas, the speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, won.
In his decision on the lawsuit brought by Mohammed Modibbo against the Peoples Democratic Party and four other parties, Justice Abdulaaziz Anka declared the Peoples Democratic Party’s senatorial primary elections for Adamawa Central invalid.
The fourth defendant, Chairman of the Governing Council at Adamawa State University, Alhaji Auwal Tukur, participated as a political appointee in violation of the new Electoral Act 2022, the judge ruled, and as a result “the entire process is hereby nullified.”
“The only issue proved before the court is as regards the fourth defendant’s engagement in the primary election conducted, him being a political appointee, i.e. chairman of the governing council Adamawa State University, Mubi, therefore, the entire process is hereby void by this honourable court,” he said.

Due to significant non-compliance with the Electoral Act of 2022, the party will not be able to field a candidate for the general election in 2023.
This is the court’s final ruling against the entire political party and all of its members.
Iya-Abbas, speaker of the Adamawa State House, defeated Tukur, the son of former PDP chairman Babanga Tukur, and five other candidates to win the party’s nomination for the Adamawa Central Senatorial District.
The other candidates were Barrister D. D. Azura, Mohammed Modibbo, Ibrahim Mustapha, Ibrahim Abubakar, and Hon. Abdullahi Prambe.

Dissatisfied with the primary’s result, Modibbo filed a lawsuit challenging the way it was conducted, specifically whether Auwal Tukur, a political appointee who had not resigned his position, was allowed to vote.
Tukur’s participation in the PDP’s senatorial primary, according to the court’s ruling, violated the Electoral Act 2022, so the election was declared invalid.
