FG declares Monday May 29

Monday, May 29 has been declared a federal holiday to commemorate the inauguration of the sixteenth democratically elected President.

On Friday in Abuja, Minister of Interior Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola made the announcement on behalf of the government.

The Minister congratulated all Nigerians on this momentous occasion, praising them for their faith in democracy as evidenced by their participation in the nationwide elections that led to the inauguration of the President and his Vice President, as well as in all elections across .

In a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Shuaib Belgore, the Minister urged Nigerians to continue supporting and promoting democracy by adhering to the rule of law and upholding all democratic institutions.

“Democracy is an unfinished business everywhere, and the only way it can continue to develop and serve its purpose of being the vehicle to good governance and the welfare of all the people is by adhering to its tenets of rule of law, support for democratic institutions, promotion of a free and responsible press, and advancement of the frontiers of freedom for all the people,” the Minister said.

Aregbesola urged Nigerians to continue promoting peaceful coexistence and love for our neighbours, noting that only in a peaceful environment can we practice democracy and reap its benefits.

Since 1999, the Minister lauded all Nigerians for their ardent efforts to establish unbroken civilian rule and successful government transitions.

He urged them to support and cooperate with the incoming administration, arguing that the people’s boundless vigour is the nation’s greatest strength.

The Minister urged Nigerians to shun all forms of violence and other unfavourable behaviour, stating that all hands must be on deck for Nigeria’s bright future.
