The court’s judgment, delivered on January 12, 2024, has affirmed Yusuf’s victory and nullified the previous decisions that had removed him from office.

This legal saga began in September when the Kano state governorship election petition tribunal ousted Yusuf from his position. The tribunal’s decision was based on the deduction of 165,663 votes from the 1,019,602 initially recorded for Yusuf. The rationale behind this deduction was that the ballot papers, accounting for the deducted votes, were not appropriately stamped, signed, and dated, as mandated by electoral laws.

Following this deduction, the tribunal declared Nasiru Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the election. Dissatisfied with this outcome, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and its candidate, Abba Kabir Yusuf, challenged the verdict at the appellate court.

On November 17, the Court of Appeal upheld the tribunal’s decision, reinforcing the stance that Yusuf was not a member of the NNPP when he contested the election. However, the recent Supreme Court ruling has overturned these decisions, reinstating Yusuf as the duly and legitimate Governor of Kano State.

This verdict holds significant implications for the political landscape in Kano and reverberates through the broader Nigerian political context. The Supreme Court’s intervention marks a pivotal moment, reaffirming the democratic process and the importance of adhering to electoral laws in determining the rightful leaders of the states.
