Kano High Court Orders Death by Hanging for Chinese National in Ummu’s Murder Case
KANO — A High Court in Kano State sentenced Chinese national, Frank Geng Quangrong, to death by hanging for the murder of his Nigerian partner, Ummukulsum Buhari.
Residing in Railway Quarters, Kano, Quangrong was found guilty of culpable homicide.
Justice Sanusi Ma’aji delivered the verdict, stating the prosecution had convincingly proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
“The defendant’s testimony is riddled with inconsistencies. Therefore, I find him guilty. I also recommend the Kano State Governor consider mercy for the convict,” Justice Ma’aji announced.

The prosecution, led by the Attorney-General of Kano State, Haruna Dederi, detailed that the crime occurred on September 16, 2022, at Janbulo Quarters, Kano. According to Dederi, at approximately 9 p.m. that day, Quangrong fatally stabbed Buhari in her residence for reasons not disclosed.
“Following the attack, the victim was swiftly transported to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano, where her death was confirmed by a medical doctor,” he added.
Quangrong had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Reacting to the verdict, Attorney General Haruna Dederi described it as a landmark judgment for the state. Meanwhile, Muhammad Dan’zumi, representing the defence, signaled intentions to challenge the decision at the Court of Appeal, highlighting specific grounds for appeal noted in the judgment.
