Military sources and security analyst Zagazola Makama have confirmed a recent attack carried out by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), the faction formerly known as Jamā’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihād, on a police station in Gajiram, Borno State.
The incident occurred around 1 am on Saturday, as terrorists, disguised and infiltrating the town at midnight, targeted the police quarters. Reports indicate that they opened fire on the policemen, resulting in the tragic death of at least four officers.

Zagazola Makama reported that Mobile Policemen at the police quarters engaged the terrorists in a heavy gun battle, preventing them from burning down the facility. When the troops of Operation Hadin Kai in Gajiram arrived at the scene, the terrorists had already fled.
Gajiram, located approximately 73 kilometers from Borno State’s capital, has experienced a rise in violence, with this attack further highlighting the security challenges faced by the region.

The Islamic State-backed ISWAP has been consolidating its influence in areas around Lake Chad since the death of Jamā’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihād leader, Abubakar Shekau. The group’s membership has grown with the defection of hundreds of Boko Haram fighters formerly under Shekau’s command.
Despite claims by the Nigerian Army that the insurgency has been largely defeated, the ongoing violence instigated by terrorist groups like ISWAP continues to result in the loss of lives and the displacement of millions in Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe states. The situation underscores the persistent challenges facing efforts to maintain security in the region.
