Court sacks MC Oluomo’s park committee, reinstates RTEAN

The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) has been ordered to resume operations in Lagos State by the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), which also dismissed the Lagos State Parks and Garages Management Committee, led by Musiliu Akinsanya, also known as MC Oluomo.

Yesterday, Justice Maureen Esowe declared that the Lagos State government’s creation of a parks and management committee was unlawful. In its decision, the court further prohibited the state government from meddling with the executive committee of the union.

Justice Esowe ruled that instead of looking into the dispute, the state government and the police should have stepped in by detaining and prosecuting anyone responsible for any altercation allegedly involving union members.

Additionally, the judge ordered the police to stop intimidating the RTEAN officers, take down any barriers they had put up around their secretariat, and give them free access to their offices.

The defendants’ preliminary objection to the lawsuit was dismissed by the court, which decided that there was no substantial dispute that called for the exchange of pleadings.

In order to challenge the Lagos State government for allegedly dissolving the elected executive committee of the union in the state and appointing a caretaker body, known as the Parks and Garages Administrators, led by MC Oluomo, RTEAN had filed the lawsuit with the filing number NICN/LA/381/2022 in October 2022.
