The tribunal ruled to restrain MultiChoice from proceeding with the planned price hike until the hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed before it.

Shafii stated, “The 1st defendant is hereby restrained from taking any step(s) that may negatively affect the rights of the claimant and other consumers in respect of the suit pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.”

All parties involved are directed to appear before the tribunal on May 7 at 10 a.m. for the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

Festus Onifade, the applicant who is also a legal practitioner, brought the suit against MultiChoice Nigeria Ltd and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) before the tribunal on April 29.

In the suit, marked CCPT/OP/2/2024, Onifade sought two orders, including an interim injunction restraining MultiChoice from implementing the impending price increase scheduled to take effect from May 1, 2024.

The tribunal’s decision comes after MultiChoice had previously increased the prices of all its packages on April 1, 2022.
