Oyo guber poll: MURIC kicks as rebuilt central mosque is renamed after Makinde
Muslim Rights Concern has harshly criticised the Oyo state government’s decision to rename the newly rebuilt central mosque in the Iwo Road area of Ibadan after Governor Seyi Makinde.
Ejes Gist News Nigeria gathered that the Islamic group is demanding that the mosque’s name be changed immediately.
Ishaq Akintola, the executive director of MURIC, announced this in a statement on March 11.
Seyi Makinde announced in October 2019 that the mosque would be demolished due to the construction of a bus terminal.
The governor estimated that the project would be completed between 9 and 11 months.
Governor Makinde added that a church in the vicinity of the airport would also be impacted.
MURIC accused the governor, who was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the upcoming governorship election, of seeking cheap political gain by having a religious structure named after him while he was seeking re-election for a second term.
The group asserted that the timing of the mosque’s completion was calculated, and that the governor used the mosque as a ploy to fool the Oyo state Muslim community.
The group stated:
“We are stunned to the bone. What brazenness! It is desecration of our sacred space. Makinde cannot be worshipped. We will only worship Allah. It would have been appropriate if he had not initially destroyed our mosque. However, we can now ask him, “Where is our mosque?” It is incredibly immoral. His conduct lacks tact as well.”
