The Bayelsa State Government has approved the disbursement of N35,000 wage bonuses to civil servants across ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to alleviate the impact of soaring living expenses.

 

Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo disclosed this during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) south-south zone, headed by Chairman Comrade Bolum Martin and Vice Chairman Comrade Julius Laye, at the Government House, Yenagoa on Friday, April 12.

In a statement by the deputy governor’s media aide, Doubara Atasi, it was clarified that Governor Douye Diri endorsed the wage incentives in compliance with the federal government’s call for states to utilize funds from oil subsidy removal to alleviate workers’ economic hardships.

 

Ewhrudjakpo instructed the Head of the State Civil Service, Mrs Biobelemoye Charles-Onyeama, to devise strategies for disbursing the N35,000 wage awards to all civil servants on the state payroll.

Highlighting the pivotal role of the civil service in executing governmental agendas, the deputy governor pledged the administration’s unwavering commitment to civil servants’ welfare.

 

He assured the TUC of governmental backing to fulfill their objectives and foster harmonious industrial relations within the state, the South-South region, and the nation at large.

Ewhrudjakpo urged the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to collaborate for the benefit of workers and the entire populace.

He emphasized the significance of a well-functioning civil service, stating that any disregard for it is detrimental to governance success.

Bolum Martin, the TUC South-South Zone chairman, commended the labor-friendly approach of the Diri-led government, applauding Bayelsa for extending the 30 percent minimum wage to local government workers.

Martin also praised the government’s initiatives such as call duty allowance for health workers, wage awards for local government employees, and the provision of conducive work environments.

 

The TUC representatives were in Bayelsa for a zonal meeting ahead of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting next month.

Delta Civil Servants Anticipate Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s Decision.

 

Meanwhile, Delta State civil servants await Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s decision regarding the implementation of the Wage Awards approved by the Federal Executive Council of Nigeria.

 

A Delta civil servant, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, expressed belief that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori will follow the lead of his counterpart, who is also his neighbor and from the same party, PDP, in approving the wage awards for all Delta civil servants.
