Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, held a campaign rally in Kano state on Thursday, where he reaffirmed his plans to reopen the borders, restore peace, and ensure agricultural and industrial revolutions, among others.

The absence of the usual handing over of party flag to the party’s gubernatorial candidate on the agenda of the rally was a major highlight of the rally, as Atiku and the party hierarchy conspicuously refused to endorse either of the party’s two parallel gubernatorial candidates.

The party in Kano state is in the midst of a leadership crisis that has led to the emergence of two parallel gubernatorial candidates, Mohammad Abacha and Sadiq Wali.

While Wali, son of former Minister of Foreign Affairs Aminu Wali, was recognized by the electoral umpire, which placed his name on its list, a court recognized General Sani Abacha’s son.

During the party’s presidential campaign rally at the Sani Abacha stadium, our correspondent observed that both candidates were on stage with Atiku, but the former Vice President did not mention or raise the hands of either candidate while addressing the crowd.

A source within the party’s hierarchy, who wished to remain anonymous, told our correspondent that the party was exercising extreme caution in light of the Supreme Court’s decision on Friday (today).

“We did not want Atiku to raise Abacha’s hand on Thursday, because on Friday, the Supreme Court will rule that Wali is our candidate,” he said.

In his brief speech, Atiku asked Kano voters if they desire the return of peace, the expansion of agriculture and industry, and the reopening of borders; the crowd responded affirmatively.

Afterward, he stated, “Only a PDP administration can implement these four policies; therefore, I urge you to vote PDP from top to bottom, and I guarantee that these policies will be implemented.”
