EFCC, ICPC probe depositors of old naira at CBN branch

Anti-corruption agencies are scrutinizing depositors of millions of old N500 and N1,000 notes at the Ilorin branch of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Operatives from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, among others, are on the ground to monitor deposits and educate depositors on the repercussions of depositing millions of naira from dubious sources.

Anti-corruption agencies educate depositors who are suspected of acting as fronts for politicians in order to deposit funds on their behalf.

Security sources at the CBN branch told Ejes Gist News Nigeria “Depositors of millions of naira will be required to contact their respective commercial banks after one month, when the investigation into their sources of funds will be complete.

As a result of the ongoing new naira swap, it is suspected that some politicians are using people as fronts to deposit millions of dollars on their behalf.

According to findings by Ejes Gist News Nigeria correspondent in Ilorin, CBN officials worked on Saturday and Sunday to accommodate depositors’ requests.

Ejes Gist News Nigeria has also learned that external officials involved in the exercise have alleged that depositors of millions of naira pay bribes of at least N10,000 to facilitate the processing of their deposits.

Before counting and final judgment, depositors must pass through three or four stages, a bank official who requested anonymity revealed to our correspondent.

He stated, “Some depositors stand to lose their funds if, after an investigation by anti-corruption agencies, they are unable to adequately account for their sources of income.”

As observed by this online newspaper on Sunday, some of the depositors who thronged the CBN arrived with sacks of naira notes to deposit in accordance with the apex bank’s directive.
