Step down as Afenifere leader, youths tell Adebanjo

Under the auspices of the Yoruba Afenifere Youths Organisation of Nigeria, a group of young people have voted against Pa Ayo Adebanjo, the leader of the pan-Yoruba sociopolitical organisation Afenifere.

In the best interests of the organisation and the Yoruba people as a whole, the group urged Adebanjo to step down as Afenifere’s interim leader.

They made the request at a press conference held in Lagos on Tuesday, following a meeting of Afenifere Youth National leaders in Yoruba land, including the states of Kogi and Kwara.

In a statement, the group condemned Adebanjo’s suspension of two national officers of Afenifere. They stated that this was done without the approval of the group’s leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

According to the group, Afenifere has deviated since Adebanjo became acting leader because he abandoned the uncompromising pursuit and defence of the Yoruba people’s interests.

“We also noted with regret that rather than rally the Yoruba people behind their son, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, now the President-elect of Nigeria, to emerge as President of this great country, Baba Adebanjo vigorously campaigned against him, and even after Tinubu’s well-deserved and hard-earned victory through a credible presidential election, he (Adebanjo) still wants the Presidency out of Yoruba land.

“For the sake of clarity, we noted that Pa Ayo Adebanjo is not the leader of Afenifere, but rather the acting leader authorised by Pa Reuben Fasoranti. We dare to assert that Pa Adebanjo’s appointment as acting leader is consistent with our rich historical precedent.

“We will not allow Pa Ayo Adebanjo to mortgage our future.” We condemned in its entirety Pa Ayo Adebanjo’s flagrant disobedience as acting leader of Afenifere. “A vote of no confidence is hereby passed in the acting leader of Afenifere, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, and he should immediately cease parading himself as the leader/acting leader of Afenifere,” read the communique.
