NLC, TUC suspend planned nationwide strike

 

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, have suspended the nationwide strike over the removal of fuel subsidies.

On Monday night, after a meeting between the federal government and unions at Aso Villa, the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, disclosed this information.

According to him, the Federal Government, the TUC, and the NLC would establish a joint committee to review any wage increase or award proposal and establish a framework and implementation schedule.

Part of a communique signed after the meeting reads, “The Federal Government, the TUC, and the NLC will review the World Bank-financed Cash transfer scheme and propose the inclusion of low-income earners.”

NLC and TUC had previously threatened a nationwide strike on Wednesday.

 

Meanwhile,  Ejes Gist News Nigeria earlier reported that the National Industrial Court in Abuja had ordered labour unions not to strike.

 

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited announced a new nationwide fuel pricing structure on Wednesday of last week.

The fuel pump price increased from N197 per litre to over N500 as a result of this development.

Gbajabiamila added that the meeting also agreed to examine obstacle to effective delivery in the education sector and propose implementation solutions.

 

“The Labour centres and the Federal Government shall review and establish the framework for finishing the rehabilitation of the nation’s refineries.

The federal government provides a framework for the nation-wide maintenance of roads and expansion of rail networks.

“All other demands submitted by the TUC to the Federal Government will be assessed by the joint committee,” he said.

 

He emphasised that the NLC agreed to immediately suspend the strike notice to allow for additional consultations, as well as to continue the ongoing engagements and reach a conclusion on the resolutions.

 

The Presidents and Secretaries of the NLC and TUC, as well as the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour Employment, Ms Kachollom Daju, endorsed the resolution.
