Terrorism: Federal Government Invites Gumi For Questioning
The government led by President Bola Tinubu, on Monday, announced that Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Ahmad Gumi, has been summoned for questioning over his remarks concerning the actions of bandits in Nigeria.
Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and Orientation, made this announcement while addressing journalists at the State House in Abuja.
Idris emphasized that Gumi is not exempt from the law, highlighting the government’s decision to invite him for questioning as necessary.
It is important to recall that the cleric has previously criticized the Federal Government’s persistent use of force, or kinetic measures, to secure the release of kidnapping victims.
Gumi advocated for a strategy that involves engaging more closely with the bandits to understand their needs and improve their living conditions.
He argued that the government’s aggressive approach has exacerbated the situation, transforming the bandits into more dangerous adversaries.
“These bandits have become increasingly vicious. Previously, they did not resort to such actions. They are now attacking more vulnerable targets, a shift that can be attributed to the kinetic strategy employed,” he stated.
“Currently, we are confronting bandits who remain unidentified. Fighting an unknown enemy is futile. We proposed an alternative: to infiltrate their ranks, identify them, and understand their affiliations. Lamentably, we lack sufficient intelligence.

“The forceful handling of this issue is only worsening it. Now, they are abducting children and resorting to threats of death, which was not their practice before. Thus, it seems prudent to revisit our strategy and consider a genuinely non-kinetic approach.”
