Commits to Apologizing to Newspapers After Halting Birthday Festivities

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has promised to extend apologies to newspapers following the cancellation of any grand birthday celebrations for himself on March 29.

The Nigerian leader conveyed this decision while addressing members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Monday at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

recognised that newspapers anticipating revenue from advertisements might feel disappointed due to his directive to family, friends, and well-wishers to forego such activities.

“I know they will be upset with me. However, I will offer my apologies to them later,” he stated.

President Tinubu reiterated his position that hosting such a birthday event would be discordant with the national mood. He expressed his desire to avoid the use of public funds by government agencies for congratulatory advertorials in his honour.

The President restated his preference for well-wishers to support orphanages or homes for the older people instead.

It is important to note that President Tinubu, who will be turning 72 on March 29, 2024, had previously directed against organizing any celebrations in light of the current national sentiment.

In a statement released on Sunday by his special adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President encouraged his associates and well-wishers nationwide not to hold any celebratory events or place goodwill messages in newspapers on his behalf, but rather to donate to charitable organizations of their choice in his name.
