I am currently a corps member, a journey I began eight months ago out of a sense of duty and patriotism to my country. I was unable to complete the scheme when first mobilized in 2021,” Hannatu Musawa states in her statement.

She clarifies that her dual roles as a minister and a serving corps member are not in contravention of the Nigerian constitution or the NYSC Act. There is no provision in either of them that prohibits a serving corps member from being appointed by the President or any other appointing authority into political positions,” she adds.

Hannatu Musawa cites a ruling by Justice Taiwo in a 2021 case before a Federal High Court in Abuja, which established that a first-degree certificate or the NYSC certificate is not mandatory for ministerial appointments in the country.

Explaining the delay in her NYSC program, Musawa shares, “I initiated my mandatory national service as a corps member deployed to Akwa-Ibom State in 2001 after completing my university education. Due to family obligations, I couldn’t complete the service that same year after being redeployed to Kaduna State.

With determination, she expresses her commitment to fulfilling her national duty. I reapplied to the NYSC for mobilization last year. I was graciously mobilized and posted to serve in Abuja, where I have dedicated the past eight months before my current appointment as a minister,” she elaborates.
