Again, Armed Herders Attack Benue IDPs Camp, Kill 43, Injure Many

 

Benue State may have witnessed the deaths of as many as 43 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

In a late-night attack on LGEA Primary School Mgban in Nyiev Council Ward of Guma, Local Government Area, LGA, of Benue state, armed herdsmen are suspected to have killed them.

The Primary School that houses IDPs was attacked by marauders around 10 p.m. on Good Friday, according to information gathered by Ejes Gist News Nigeria, although details of the incident are still sketchy.

 

The source implied that pregnant women and children were among the 43 bodies recovered so far from the attack site, while dozens sustained severe injuries and many were still missing.

A similar attack in Umogidi village, Enetekpa Adoka district of Otukpo LGA a few days prior claimed 52 lives.

 

Meanwhile, In Bauchi State, four individuals have been arrested for allegedly torturing a suspected watermelon thief to death.

Ahmed Wakil, the state police’s public relations officer, made this information available to the press on Friday.

According to him, the deceased was apprehended after allegedly stealing seven watermelons worth N2,000 from a farm in Dallaji village, Tudin Wada ward, Warji Local Government Area, Bauchi State.

Wakil, a Superintendent of Police, stated, “On March 29, 2023, at approximately 10 a.m., Ado Sanya (40), of Dallaji village, Tudun Wada ward, Warji LGA, reported at the Warji Divisional Police Headquarters that on the same date, at approximately 1:20 a.m., Ibrahim Hashimu unlawfully entered the farmland of Mohammed Garba, of the same address, and stole some watermelons.

Mohammad Daluta (24), Ibrahim Mahmud (22), Bashir Mahmud (18), and Abdullahi Mahmud (22), all males residing at the same address, bound his hands with a rope and beat him with sticks.

 

“Upon receiving the report, a team of detectives rushed to the scene and evacuated the victim to Warji General Hospital for medical care. From there, he was transferred to Cottage Hospital, Gwaram LGA, Jigawa State, where he was pronounced dead by a physician.

“An investigation was launched in earnest, and preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, Ibrahim Hashimu, trespassed on a summer farm and stole seven watermelon fruits worth N2,000.

“As he was removing the stolen items, the farm owner apprehended him on the spot. Then, he and others conspired to beat him with sticks. Consequently, he sustained an internal injury that ultimately led to his demise.

 

As a result, all four of the aforementioned suspects were successfully apprehended, and the investigation into the case’s complexities continues.

 

In response to the incident, the state police commissioner, Aminu Alhassan, accused the suspects of taking the law into their own hands.

 

He ordered that the case be transferred to the Bauchi office of the State Criminal Investigation Department for investigation.
