In a press briefing on Wednesday, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde provided updates on the tragic explosion that occurred in the Bodija Area of Ibadan on Tuesday.

According to the governor, preliminary investigations by security agencies indicate that the blast was caused by explosive devices stored by illegal miners in one of the houses in Bodija.

Governor Makinde, who visited the scene Tuesday night, confirmed that two individuals lost their lives, and 77 others sustained injuries in the incident. The explosion, which had a significant impact on various areas, including the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, and residences, resulted in extensive damage and widespread shock across the state.

Investigation ongoing on Ibadan explosion

While investigations are ongoing, Governor Makinde assured the public that anyone found culpable for the tragedy would be brought to justice. He tweeted, “All those found culpable for this will be brought to book.”

The governor expressed condolences for the loss of two lives and extended sympathies to the injured victims, stating, “In total, we have 77 injured victims so far, most of whom were treated and discharged, and two fatalities. May their souls rest in peace, and may God give their loved ones the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”

Highlighting the government’s commitment to supporting those affected, Governor Makinde announced that the medical bills of the victims would be covered by the state. Additionally, he pledged assistance for individuals whose houses were affected, ensuring they receive support to rebuild their lives.

Urging residents to remain calm, the governor emphasized ongoing rescue operations at the incident site. He disclosed the deployment of earth-moving equipment, ambulances, emergency lights, and security personnel to facilitate the process. Medical personnel are on standby at hospitals across Ibadan, ready to provide necessary assistance to the injured.
