According to statements attributed to Mohammad Jamshidi, the deputy chief of staff for political affairs to the Iranian president, Iran has explicitly requested the US to “step aside” as it prepares to retaliate against a suspected Israeli attack on its consulate in Syria.

Jamshidi’s remarks, reported by X, emphasized Iran’s warning to the US against becoming entangled in what it perceives as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s agenda, urging American forces to avoid involvement to prevent potential repercussions.

Why does Israel keep launching attacks in Syria?

“In response, the US asked Iran not to hit American targets,” Jamshidi reportedly stated.

Despite these assertions, the US has not officially commented on the alleged message conveyed by Iran.

NBC also reported on the situation, citing two unnamed US officials who expressed concerns within President Joe Biden’s administration about the possibility of an attack occurring within Israel, particularly targeting military or intelligence facilities rather than civilian areas.

In an unusual move, the Biden administration directly communicated to Iran its lack of prior knowledge regarding Monday’s strike in Damascus, as reported by Bloomberg. This communication was interpreted as an attempt to prevent potential attacks on US forces or bases in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, Iran has vowed to retaliate against Israel, its longstanding adversary, although the timing and nature of such a response remain uncertain. There is speculation as to whether Iran will opt for a direct assault on Israel or utilize proxy groups like Hezbollah, based in Lebanon, to carry out its objectives.

The recent airstrike targeting the Iranian consulate in Damascus, which resulted in the deaths of at least seven Iranians, including two generals, marked a significant escalation. While Israel has previously targeted Iran-linked assets in Syria, this incident represented the first direct attack on an Iranian diplomatic establishment.

In response to the heightened tensions, Israel has implemented various defensive measures, including the cancellation of home leave for combat troops, the mobilization of reserves, and the reinforcement of air defenses.

Additionally, Israel has taken steps to disrupt GPS-navigated drones or missiles that could pose a threat to the country’s security.

Hezbollah, a powerful militia designated as a terrorist organization by multiple countries, has also weighed in on the situation. Its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, acknowledged the inevitability of a response from Iran but stated that Hezbollah would refrain from interference in such decisions.

Nasrallah underscored the readiness of Hezbollah for any potential conflict with Israel, highlighting the coordination among Iran’s “resistance groups” in the region.

As tensions continue to simmer, the region braces for the possibility of further escalations and their potential implications for regional stability.
