A medical doctor has been sentenced to a two-year prison term for the theft of hospital beds in Akwa Ibom State. The verdict was handed down by the Akwa Ibom State High Court in Eket, sending shockwaves through the medical community.

Dr. Nwaopara Adolphus Uche, a 39-year-old medical professional hailing from Mbieri in the Imo State, was found guilty of stealing beds from Immanuel General Hospital in Eket and Immanuel Psychiatric Hospital. The stolen beds were reportedly relocated to his private clinic.
The presiding judge, Justice Nsemeke Daniel, emphasized that Dr. Adolphus Uche had abused his position as the Medical Superintendent of Immanuel Psychiatric Hospital to carry out this audacious crime.
In a parallel conviction, two individuals were sentenced to one year in prison each for their roles in the bed theft. Kubiat Anthony Isidore, a 28-year-old welder from Ikot Idim in Odoro Ikot, Essien Udim Local Government Area, had conspired with Dr. Adolphus Uche in the theft.

Additionally, Felix Samuel Ekwere, a 35-year-old security personnel at Immanuel General Hospital, hailing from Ekpene Obo in Esit Eket, was caught red-handed attempting to move some of the stolen hospital beds from the facility during the night. Ekwere admitted to the police that he had been instructed by the convicted Medical Superintendent to perform this act.
The prosecution of these individuals was carried out by the state through the Ministry of Justice, underscoring the seriousness with which such actions are viewed in Akwa Ibom State.
