Gunmen attack Election monitoring teams in Imo, Abuja

 

On Saturday, February 25, 2023, political thugs attacked a team of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, agents who were on duty monitoring the presidential and national assembly elections near Chief’s palace in Bwari Area council of the Federal Capital Territory.

 

Following the arrest of a man suspected of masterminding a well-orchestrated vote-buying scheme at the polling station located at Science Primary School, Bwari, the attack occurred.

The team had apprehended the suspect, believed to be around 30 years old, and retrieved from him a list of beneficiaries to whom he had already transferred funds using an online banking application.

 

As the suspect was being moved away from the polling station, thugs attacked the Commission’s patrol van, shattering the windshield.

Before members of the Joint Task Force team comprising the Department of State Services, the Nigerian Police, and others, arrived on the scene, they only retreated to their hiding places after a Commission operative fired warning shots in response.

The occurrence was reported immediately to the Bwari Police Station.

 

Similarly, a team of EFCC agents on election monitoring duty at Unit 001, Mann Primary School behind Chorobim junction were shot at by unidentified individuals driving two black Prado SUVs and one white Hilux outside of the polling unit.

These individuals were suspected of buying votes. The response of the EFCC team compelled them to flee the scene. The incident was officially reported to Haruna Femi, DCP of Operations at the Imo State Police Command.
