Monday Okpebholo, the senator representing Edo Central, has been officially declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the upcoming governorship election in the state, scheduled for September 21.

Bassey Otu, the governor of Cross River and the chairman of the APC supplementary primary election, announced Monday Okpebholo as the winner of the election on Friday in Benin.
Otu disclosed that the candidate garnered 12,433 votes, surpassing 11 other aspirants in the contest.
On February 17, Hope Uzodinma, the former chairman of the primary election committee, had initially declared Dennis Idahosa, a member of the House of Representatives, as the winner of the primary election.
However, Ojo Babatunde, the spokesperson of the returning officers, reported that Sunday Dekeri, a lawmaker representing Etsako federal constituency in the House of Representatives, secured 25,384 votes, defeating Idahosa.

Okpebholo contested the results, asserting that he had won the election with over 6,000 votes.
As a result, the APC National Working Committee (NWC) declared the election inconclusive and ordered a supplementary primary to be conducted on Thursday. Uzodinma was replaced by Otu as the chairman.
In the rerun, Idahosa, who initially led in the first ballot with 4,483 votes, concluded with 6,541 votes.
