The incident occurred in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.

The video shows police officers dragging and tearing the victims’ clothes while slapping, hitting, and cutting them with a machete.

According to video taken by some residents of the area, police officers in a deep red Toyota Sienna minivan stormed the compound where the students live and began brutalising them without explaining their offences.

“See how he is cutting him with the cutlass,” one of the residents who recorded the incident said in pidgin English. What type of thing is this? Look at what the cops are doing. They broke into someone’s compound. Look at what the police are doing in Owerri. These people did nothing. They (police) storm the compound.”

The video was shared on Twitter by @ebe_tins, who stated, “These are Imo state university students who police are assaulting because they refuse to give out their phones to search.”
