Nathaniel Bassey Petitions IGP Over False Allegations of Paternity

Gospel minister Nathaniel Bassey has taken legal action against four individuals who falsely accused him of fathering singer Mercy Chinwo’s son, petitioning the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun to investigate and prosecute the perpetrators for criminal defamation and cyberstalking.

The petition, submitted by Bassey’s legal team comprising Peter Abraham, Uche Matthew, Gbenga Agunloye, and Anthony Abia on April 1, 2024, outlines the gravity of the situation. Last week, four social media users, identified as Okoronkwo Ejike, Kingsley Ibeh, Terrence Ekot, and Dj Spoiltkid, circulated baseless allegations suggesting Bassey’s paternity of Mercy Chinwo’s child.

Nathaniel Bassey debunked the claim.

Expressing dismay over the false claims, Bassey’s lawyers emphasized the detrimental impact on his reputation and character. The petition highlighted specific social media posts by the accused individuals, which circulated widely, labeling Bassey as the father of Mercy Chinwo’s child, despite her being married to another man.

The lawyers condemned these actions as an attempt to tarnish Bassey’s image and character, stressing that such behavior is not only defamatory but also constitutes cyberstalking, which contravenes Sections 373 and 375 of the Criminal Code Act and Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act.

Bassey’s legal team urged the police authorities to swiftly investigate the matter, apprehend the suspects, and bring them to justice. They emphasized the importance of upholding justice to prevent similar incidents in the future, underscoring the far-reaching consequences of false accusations on social media.

They stressed that addressing such incidents is crucial not only for Bassey’s personal reputation but also to maintain the sanctity of online discourse and protect individuals from unwarranted attacks.

The petition serves as a reminder of the potential risks associated with misinformation and defamation on social media platforms, highlighting the importance of responsible online behavior.
