Naval Officer Beaten to Death by Mob in Southwest

In a tragic incident that occurred on Monday, a naval officer identified as Akingbohun M, attached to the Navy Secondary School in Imeri, Ose local government area of Ondo State, was mercilessly beaten to death by a mob of assailants. The incident, which took place in Idoani, was reported by a friend of the deceased, Sunday Olaoluwa.

 

According to SP Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the Ondo State Police spokesperson, the fatal altercation arose from a minor motorcycle accident. The deceased was attacked during a dispute, and the suspects used iron and planks as weapons to assault him. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he was tragically pronounced dead upon arrival. The suspects responsible for the attack are currently at large.

Dennis Adekunle, Chairman of Ose Local Government, expressed his condemnation of the killing and assured the Naval authorities of the community’s cooperation in restoring calm. In a statement, he appealed to the Naval authorities at the school to exercise restraint and use minimal force during their search for the suspects.

 

Eyewitnesses reported that the incident unfolded when the deceased unintentionally splashed mud water on an okada rider and his passenger, identified as Ayo. Despite the deceased’s sincere apology, the situation escalated as the okada rider summoned local hoodlums to the scene. One of the assailants struck the naval officer on the head with an iron rod, causing him to collapse.

While the police apprehended the okada rider, the thugs responsible for the fatal blow managed to escape upon hearing news of the officer’s death. However, Naval officials have since launched an operation in Idoani to locate and apprehend the fleeing culprits.

 

The presence of the Naval personnel has had a significant impact on the community, as commercial activities have come to a halt and many young men have fled to neighboring communities to avoid potential arrest.
