In an interview with The Nation, Commodore Vaughan explained the purpose of naval diplomacy, stating that all navies around the world have a diplomatic responsibility to engage in flag showing visits to countries with which they have diplomatic and bilateral ties. He further pointed out that such visits are not uncommon, as American, European, French, and Spanish navies frequently conduct them.

The commodore also highlighted the growing interest of China in Nigeria and Africa, emphasizing that the visit was a routine gesture aimed at fostering and showcasing the existing bilateral ties. He recalled previous instances of Chinese generosity towards Nigeria, including the gifting of a ship to the Nigerian government and the provision of equipment to the Nigerian Army.

Normal Naval Tradition and Exchange of Pleasantries

Commodore Vaughan further elaborated on the visit, explaining that it followed a normal naval tradition. The Chinese warship’s presence would enable the crew to visit their embassy, explore places of interest in Lagos, engage in pleasantries, and participate in novelty matches with Nigerian sailors.

He concluded by highlighting the historical collaboration between China and Nigeria, including the construction of two offshore patrol vessels in China and the recent gift of another ship. This visit, therefore, served as a symbol of the enduring relationship between the two nations.
