A purported audio recording of Obi pleading with Oyedepo to garner votes for him during the presidential election sparked controversy on social media.
In an online audio recording, Obi is heard pleading with a clergyman to mobilise voters in the South West and Kwara State, describing the election as a “religious war.”
Since then, Obi has denied the conversation, claiming the audio was altered.
Supporters of the former Anambra governor accused NCC of leaking the audio recording.
However, the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka, issued a statement denying the allegations, stating that the commission lacks the ability to track or leak telephone conversations.

“The Commission categorically denies the allegations. The provisions of the Nigerian Communication Act (NCA) of 2003 and other federal laws prohibit the Commission from “tracking” or “leaking” the telephone conversations of any individual.
“The Commission has referred the allegations, which we take seriously, to the appropriate security agencies for investigation and appropriate action.
“The Commission reaffirms its commitment to discharge its responsibilities to the Nigerian people in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Nigerian Constitutional Act of 2003 (NCA 2003), and other existing Federal laws, as well as global best practises.”
