Nigerian Civil Service Commission Sacks Former High Commissioner To Namibia, Lilian Onoh, Over N50million Misappropriation, Recommends Trial By ICPC

 

The Federal Civil Service Commission has fired former Nigerian Ambassador to Namibia and former Charge d’Affaires to Jamaica, Honourable Mrs. Lilian Onoh.

Earlier, On September 22, 2021 a seven-person committee’s report indicted the controversial former Nigerian High Commissioner to Namibia for alleged financial misappropriation while she served in the Southern African nation.

Onoh was accused of illegally diverting funds intended for the mission’s daily operations and was asked to return $45,539.11 (approximately N19 million), $70,448 (approximately N30 million), and N614,000.

 

This was part of the recommendation of the seven-member committee led by Amb. Gabriel Aduda, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

A member of the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs also served on the committee.

 

The committee, which was established by Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama in response to allegations of corruption by former High Commissioner Onoh against some officials of the Nigerian Mission in Namibia, travelled to Windhoek, Namibia on April 12, 2021, where they were greeted by Charge d’ Affaires Mr. Ali Gombe.

Following the discovery of the violations, Onoh was required to return $42,500 as an education supplement for her adopted daughters and $2,614 as an excess on AIE (excess payment).

According to a letter signed by the Director of Discipline and Appeals at the Federal Civil Service Commission in Abuja, Onoh was summarily dismissed after the commission’s Disciplinary Committee found her guilty of “breach of provisions of Financial Regulations on virement, absence from duty without leave, and refusal to take/carry out lawful instruction, which are acts of serious misconduct.”

After a committee meeting, the dismissal of Christian Onoh, daughter of the former governor of Anambra State, was confirmed, even though she had been suspended since 2021.

The committee also directed that she be handed over to the Independent Commission for the Investigation of Corrupt Practises and Other Related Offences (ICPC) for investigation.

 

According to the letters dated February 28 and March 22, which were made available to the media, the committee met and deliberated on the investigation into the ambassador’s accusations, and consequently dismissed her immediately.

Her termination became effective on February 1, 2021.
