Judiciary Update

The Nigerian judiciary, the National Judicial Council (NJC) has recommended the appointment of 11 Justices to the Supreme Court, among other judicial officers. The decision was reached during the 104th meeting of the NJC.

NJC Nominates 11 Candidates for Supreme Court Justice Positions

The newly recommended Supreme Court Justices are as follows:

  3. Chioma Egondu Nwosu-Iheme
  4. Haruna Simon Tsammani
  5. Moore Aseimo A. Adumein
  6. Obande Festus Ogbuinya
  7. Stephen Jonah Adah
  8. Habeeb Adewale O. Abiru
  9. Jamilu Yammama Tukur
  10. Abubakar Sadiq Umar
  11. Mohammed Baba Idris

Additionally, the NJC recommended one Justice for the Court of Appeal, six Heads of Courts, and 26 other judicial officers across various states.

The Court of Appeal nominee is Justice Mohammed Ahmed Ramat.

Heads of Courts recommended include Justice Joel Filibus Agya (Chief Judge of Taraba State), Umar Abubakar (Chief Judge of Kebbi State), Kadi Sadiq Usman Mukhtar (Grand Kadi, Sharia Court of Appeal, Kebbi State), and A. O. Femi-Segun (President Customary Court of Appeal, Ogun State).

Other judicial officers recommended hail from states such as Taraba, Oyo, Bayelsa, Ogun, Cross River, Zamfara, Nasarawa, and Kano.

Mr. Soji Oye, the Director of Information for the NJC, emphasized that the recommended candidates for the Supreme Court bench would undergo the swearing-in process after receiving approval from President Bola Tinubu. Similarly, the Heads of Courts would be sworn in after approval by their respective state governors and confirmation by the state Houses of Assembly.

This development is crucial for maintaining the judiciary’s strength and ensuring the effective delivery of justice across the nation.
