On Thursday, August 3rd, the issued a new warning to the Nigerian federal government. In a statement signed by their national president, Joe Ajaero, the accused the Ministry of Justice and National Industrial Court of acting as “anti-democracy” agents.

Despite agreeing to suspend protests following a meeting with the President, the NLC declared that if the government does not withdraw the lawsuit filed against them, they will commence a nationwide strike on August 14, 2023.

Ajaero said NEC agreed;

To embark on a nationwide comprehensive strike beginning Monday, 14th of August, 2023 if this contemptuous court summons is not withdrawn by whosoever initiated it.

The leaders of the organised labour comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and other affiliated unions has decided to call off its nationwide strike.

On Thursday, August 3rd, the statement released by Dele Alake, the special adviser to the President on special duties, communications, and strategy, conveyed the decision of the organized group to halt the nationwide protest. This decision came after a crucial meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that took place late-night on Wednesday, August 2nd, at the State House in Abuja. The resolution to call off the protest was mentioned in the statement obtained by Legit.ng.

In a separate development, provided assurance to the NLC that the Port Harcourt refinery will commence operations by December. The refinery has been undergoing repair works since 2021, which are being carried out by the Italian firm Tecnimont. The Port Harcourt refinery is one of Nigeria’s three oil refineries, along with those in Warri and Kaduna.
