KADUNA, NIGERIA – The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, has expressed confidence that the Kaduna Refinery and Petrochemicals Company Limited will be fully operational by the end of 2024.

This encouraging announcement came as the minister assessed the progress of the ongoing quick-fix project at the refinery.

In a statement released by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Lokpobiri conveyed his optimism, stating that the refinery’s restoration is well on track. He emphasized the importance of this project for the nation’s economic prosperity and energy security, both essential for sustainable development.

 

Lokpobiri said, “I am confident that the refinery will be restreamed by the end of 2024, considering the significant level of progress I have witnessed on the tour. We will hold key players involved in the rehabilitation process accountable, and the federal government pledges its support to ensure the timely delivery of the project.

The nation’s refineries have long been a subject of concern due to their underutilization, leading to increased reliance on imported petroleum products. The refurbishment of these refineries is a critical step in achieving energy self-sufficiency and reducing the financial burden associated with fuel imports.

 

Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, echoed the minister’s sentiments and reassured the public of the commitment to getting the Kaduna Refinery back in operation. He noted that all necessary efforts are being made to expedite the process.

Kyari stated, “We are very confident that we will get the appropriate financing to get to the end of it, and ultimately, we will start to deliver value to Nigerians again. We plan the quick fix for 60,000 barrels per day so that we can start making money from this plant and continue the other part of the refinery to bring it up to its full-fledged capacity.”

Additionally, he highlighted the importance of having a reliable pipeline delivery infrastructure, mentioning the completion of the Build, Operate, and Transfer project on the pipeline, which will enhance the refinery’s functionality.
