Police Commissioner Urges Vigilance as NYSC Member Defiles Minor.
In a disheartening incident in Akwa Ibom State, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olatoye Durosinmi, has issued a stern warning to parents regarding the individuals they entrust with the care and education of their minor or teenage children. The caution comes in the wake of an arrest involving a paedophile member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who stands accused of defiling a three-year-old child left in his care for teaching purposes.
The police chief, while addressing the press during the weekend’s parade of criminal suspects at the state headquarters near Uyo, emphasized the need for parents to exercise caution when hiring lesson teachers or caregivers. Commissioner Durosinmi stressed that efforts to mold young minds could turn counterproductive if not undertaken with extreme care.
The accused NYSC member, whose identity is being kept confidential pending legal proceedings, was detained along with other criminal suspects apprehended across the state for various offenses, including oil theft, armed robbery, kidnapping, and rape during the last quarter of 2023.
Commissioner Durosinmi urged parents to be meticulous in selecting teachers, suggesting that male teachers handle male children, and female teachers take on the responsibility of teaching female children. Expressing disbelief at the actions of the accused, he questioned what would attract an adult, especially an educated and mentally sound Corps member, to such a heinous act against a three-year-old.
In an interview with LEADERSHIP, the suspect admitted to the crime, attributing it to the influence of the devil. Despite acknowledging his wrongdoing, he pleaded for forgiveness and a chance to reform.
As the legal process unfolds, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for increased vigilance in safeguarding children and the imperative of thorough background checks for individuals entrusted with the education and care of minors.
