Olubadan speaks on ‘endorsing’ Peter Obi

On Tuesday, Oba Lekan Balogun, the Olubadan of Ibadan land, denied endorsing Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s candidate for president in the 2023 election.

Recall that on Saturday, Obi paid a visit to the Olubadan at his home in Alarere.

Reports making rounds from Nigerian newspapers (ejesgist.ng not included) states that the former governor of Anambra State “got royal endorsement.”

The monarch, a former senator, however, said in a statement released by the palace that he “would never express preference for any candidate or political party in the public regardless of the degree of temptation.”

How was it possible for anyone to believe that a presidential candidate from any political party would receive an unqualified endorsement from a location like the palace of Olubadan? That must be an offensive joke taken too seriously. To put it mildly, it is absurd,” the statement said.

“While denying the Olubadan Advisory Council’s claim of endorsement, our politicians are urged to refrain from involving the palace in their plans.

“The campaign is just getting started, and the candidates’ schedules include visits to the palaces. How would they feel if the palace gates were locked behind them?

“Let it be emphasised, for the last time, that Olubadan and his cabinet members do not and cannot belong to any political party, and that they would never, under any circumstances, publicly express their preference for any candidate or political party. Everyone has a right to Olubadan’s palace.
