My Body Not For Sale, Organ-Trafficking Victim Tells , Others

 

The victim of the organ trafficking case that landed  the former Nigerian Deputy senate president of Nigeria, , in jail has declared that he is “not for sale.”.

 

Ekweremadu was given a total of nine years and eight months in prison on Friday by a court in the United Kingdom, and his wife Beatrice received a four-year, six-month sentence for her role in the scheme to remove a man’s kidney.

The third conspirator, Dr. Obinna Obeta, a physician, received a 10-year prison term.

 

At the Old Bailey, Ekweremadu, his wife, and Obeta were found guilty of conspiring to arrange the victim’s travel with the goal of abusing him for a body part.

However, the victim, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, claimed he was enticed to the United Kingdom under the pretense of employment opportunities there.

 

The victim made this statement in his impact statement, which was read in court on Friday.

In the statement, the victim described his lowly upbringing in a Lagos village, where he claimed to be the oldest of seven siblings living in a house without electricity or running water.

 

When his father developed a heart condition, he was compelled to relocate to the city and start working as a street trader full-time in order to support his family. He earned as little as 50p per sale and as little as £7 per day selling mobile phone accessories out of a wheelbarrow.

He claimed a chance to work in the was presented to him, something he had “always dreamed of but never believed would actually happen.”. ”.

 

He claimed, however, that he was dismayed to learn that the trip had been made in order to remove his organs for Sonia, Ekweremadu’s daughter.

“He [Dr. Obinna Obeta] didn’t tell me he brought me here for this reason, he didn’t tell me anything about this. My body is not for sale, so I would not have consented to any of this, the victim stated.

He continued, saying he was afraid for his safety there and could not go back. In Nigeria, the victim’s father allegedly received a visit from someone requesting that he convince the victim, his son, to drop the lawsuit.

“I am concerned for my safety in Nigeria because those people are dangerous. I believe they could kill or arrest me in Nigeria,” he continued.

 

According to the report, he informed the police that suing the “bad people” for compensation would bring him “curses and bad luck.”.
