Police Arrest Bauchi Chief, Six Others Over Communal Crisis
The Bauchi State Police Command have stated that Ishaku Komo, the Chief of Sayawa Land, also known as the Gung Zaar-select, and six other people have been arrested.
They were detained in relation to the communal unrest that occurred in Sang Village in the State’s Bogoro Local Government Area, which resulted in the burning of 74 homes and businesses, the death of a 70-year-old man, and numerous injuries.
The crisis occurred following the coronation of the Hamlet Head of Sang by Komo, a retired air commodore, according to a statement from the command’s public relations officer that was signed and made available to journalists in Bauchi on Friday.
Wakil, a Superintendent of Police, claimed that angry people from various village groups demonstrated against the installation of the new Sayawa community leader.
He continued, “As may be remembered, the Command received a distress call on April 15, 2023, at around 7:00 p.m. regarding a skirmish that was taking place in Bogoro L. G. State Department, A. Following the narratives, it has become crucial to inform the public of the Command’s investigative findings and position on the case’s actual facts.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the communal clash in Sang village of Bogoro LGA of Bauchi State originated from the Coronation one Mr. Matthew Ishaya as the Hamlet Head of Sang village Bogoro LGA of Bauchi State by Air Commodore Ishaku Komo retired, acting as Gung zaar of Sayawa Community.
“The angry people from various factions demonstrated against the installation of the new Sayawa community chief. This had the effect of rekindling the unfavorable and problematic situation. ”.
According to the statement, as a result, 65 houses, three motorcycles, and other properties worth millions of naira were set on fire by the enraged youths, who also attacked innocent residents.

The command also revealed that one Apollos Danlami, a male, was killed in the altercation while one Nahemiya Bature, a female, was injured along with six other people. This information prompted the command to take action, and they detained seven suspects in connection with the disturbance, including the retired air commodore.
His list of those detained included Air Commodore Ishaku Komo, a male (71), Matthew Ishaya, a male (56), Yakubu Bala, a male (65), Apollos Hassan, a male (72), Nathaniel Joshua, a male (40), Abenagu Zakka, a male (30), and James Dajum, a male (66).
He claimed that they found a knife, a revolver made in the area, and a cartridge.
Additionally, the command’s covert investigation revealed that the suspects are also being investigated for the crimes of criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance of the peace, mischief by fire, causing grievous harm, and culpable homicide.
Wakil, however, denied reports that went viral in the media that Air Commodore Ishaku Komo had been detained, threatened, and harassed by security forces.
They also denied the claim that Christians in the state were the target of discrimination.
