The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Gowon Estate Division in Lagos State has been removed from duty following allegations of the illegal detention of a lawyer advocating for his client’s rights.

The removal was confirmed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, in an official statement on Wednesday. Hundeyin revealed that the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Mr Adegoke Fayoade, ordered the immediate removal of the DPO in response to the allegations, as reported by the media on Jan. 4.

The decision comes after a thorough investigation into the incident, with the DPO being temporarily removed pending further review by supervisory authorities.

The Command has emphasized its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability within its ranks.

CP Fayoade has taken additional steps to address the issue, directing the Officer in Charge (OC) Legal of the Command to engage in discussions with the Nigerian Bar Association, Lagos State Branch. The aim is to foster a dialogue that prevents similar incidents in the future and promotes a healthier relationship between the police force and legal professionals.

The incident in question involved Lagos-based lawyer Olumide Sonupe, who was reportedly hospitalized after being detained by the police. Sonupe was seeking the bail of his client at the Moshalashi Police Station in the Alimosho area of the state on December 30, 2023.

This development underscores the importance of maintaining a balance between law enforcement and respecting citizens’ rights, highlighting the need for ongoing efforts to improve the relationship between the police and legal practitioners.
