“The king has been diagnosed with an infection that needs to be treated, and will therefore remain in hospital for a few days,” the palace said.

According to the palace, the 86-year-old monarch is in “stable” condition and is being treated at the Rikshospitalet in Oslo. There was no additional information provided.

The king was scheduled to attend an event commemorating Germany’s surrender in World War II in Oslo on Monday, but he was instead represented by his son and heir to the throne, Crown Prince Haakon, who has taken on some of his father’s duties in recent years.

 

“Apart from today, there has been no change to his programme, at least for the time being,” a palace spokesperson said.

Harald has been hospitalised several times recently and has been seen walking with crutches.

He was hospitalised for three days in August with a fever and was treated for an infection with intravenous antibiotics in December.

Harald had surgery in 2003 for bladder cancer and again in 2005 for heart valve issues.
