The Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Martin Amaewhule, took a significant step on Monday by passing the Rivers State Local Government (Amendment) Bill into law, despite Governor Siminialayi Fubara‘s refusal to assent.

The bill had initially been passed by the House on March 13, 2024, and forwarded to the governor for approval, but he declined to sign it.

Undeterred, the Majority Leader, Hon. Major Jack, re-presented the bill, and after a thorough debate by members, the Speaker put the matter to a vote. With a two-thirds majority, the House voted to override the governor’s veto and enact the bill into law, exercising its constitutional powers under Section 100(5) of the 1999 Constitution.

This move comes after the House passed the Rivers State Assembly Service Commission (Amendment) Bill on March 22, 2024, granting itself the authority to appoint the chairman and members of the commission.
