Abuja: In an urgent Senate session on Thursday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio assured that the Upper Chamber would not allow President Bola Tinubu to meet the same tragic fate as the late presidents of Malawi and Iran, who perished in aircraft crashes. Akpabio emphasised that the Senate is ready to ensure the safety of the Nigerian President at all costs.

The session was called to address the extension of the implementation period for the N21.83 trillion 2023 budget’s capital component and the N2.17 trillion 2023 supplementary budget.

Akpabio clarified that the Senate had not yet received any request to approve the purchase of a new presidential jet but promised that any future request would be carefully considered.

He said, “The necessity for a new presidential jet has become urgent due to the deteriorating condition of the current aircraft in the Presidential Air Fleet.”

President Tinubu has resorted to using chartered aircraft for official duties. He used chartered aircraft for his trip to South Africa for President Cyril Ramaphosa’s inauguration.

Vice President Kashim Shettima had to cancel a trip to the United States at the last minute due to issues with his official aircraft.

The Senate’s discussion reflects growing concerns over the safety and reliability of the nation’s presidential transport, highlighting the importance of safeguarding the lives of Nigeria’s top leaders.
