Slain Soldiers: Ndume Calls for Unity, Praises Tinubu for Offering Scholarships to Their Children

President Bola Tinubu has been lauded by for announcing scholarships for the children of soldiers who were tragically killed by yet-to-be-identified assailants in Okuoma, Delta State, last week.

In a statement sent to Ejes Gist News in Abuja on Thursday by the Chief Whip of the Senate, Mohammed Ali Ndume, he mentioned that the president has also promised houses to the families of the deceased military personnel.

Ndume remarked that this gesture would bolster the commitment of other security agents, noting that awarded posthumous national honours to all the slain soldiers, regardless of rank.

President Tinubu revealed these honours on Wednesday during the funeral of the military personnel at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja.

The soldiers were ambushed and killed on the 17th of March while on a peacekeeping mission in Okuama, located in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.

The fallen soldiers include A. Ali, a lieutenant colonel and the commander of the team; SD Shafa and DE Obi, both majors; and U Zakari, a captain.

Others are Yahaya Saidu, a staff sergeant; Danbaba Yahaya and Kabir Bashir, both corporals; Abdullahi Ibrahim, Bulus Haruna, Sole Opeyemi, and Bello Anas, all lance corporals.

Privates Alhaji Isah, Clement Francis, Abubakar Ali, Adamu Ibrahim, Hamman Peter, and Ibrahim Adamu were also among those killed.

President Tinubu stated that the four officers were honoured with the Member of the Order of Niger (MON), while the 13 soldiers received the Officer of the Federal Republic Medal.

“Each man now belongs to the revered list of servicemen and women who defended our country and protected their fellow Nigerians, without regard for their own safety,” he asserted.

Senator Ndume, in praising Tinubu’s actions, noted that by attending the funeral, the President has shown his patriotism.

He urged political leaders and Nigerians to set aside their differences and come together to honour these fallen heroes.

Ndume further called on the Chief of Defence Staff to follow President Tinubu’s example and confer posthumous medals on the fallen heroes.

“I commend President Bola Tinubu for his presence at the funeral of the soldiers slain in Okuama and for awarding their children full scholarships, as well as providing houses to their families,” Ndume said.
