Martin Amaewhule, the factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, whose seat has been declared vacant, has expressed his determination to reclaim the state from Governor Sim Fubara.

Amaewhule hinted at potential plots to attack the Assembly Quarters, scheduled for today, emphasizing that regardless of any onslaught, the lawmakers will stand resolute.

Attributing their firm stance to the mandate received from the people of Rivers, Amaewhule stated that their defection from the People Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was a response to the crisis within the PDP. Despite contrary opinions, he affirmed their commitment to continuing their legislative duties.

The revelation came during Amaewhule’s address to state delegates at the APC dedication service and stakeholders meeting held at the Port Harcourt Polo Club. He elaborated on the reasons for abandoning the PDP, citing the leadership style of President Bola Tinubu and claiming adherence to constitutional provisions.

We made sure that we followed due process, and that we did not do anything outside the provisions of the said Constitution. It has given room for people to defect, which is in section 109 subsection 1(g), which allows serving legislators, who want to defect, to do so. There is a division in PDP. So, in line with that section, we defected to the APC,” he asserted.

Amaewhule expressed regret over the burning and subsequent demolition of the Assembly Complex, highlighting the silence of the PDP on the matter. He criticized the actions of a purported committee meeting, emphasizing that without a quorum, any assembly activity would be considered null and void.

The political dynamics in Rivers State continue to escalate, with Amaewhule’s steadfast resolve signaling an intensified struggle for control between factions. As tensions persist, the unfolding events in the state remain a focal point of concern for political observers and residents alike.
