Nyesom Wike Calls for Peace Amidst Political Turmoil in Rivers State

In a bid to diffuse the escalating political tension in Rivers State, the former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has made a fervent plea for peace and reconciliation.

This plea comes on the heels of intense clashes with his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, resulting in a series of tumultuous events, including the defection of 27 lawmakers to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) and the controversial demolition of the state assembly complex.

Addressing the issue during a recent event in Port Harcourt, Wike offered a metaphorical perspective, cautioning against “pulling the ladder that you use in climbing.” He emphasized the importance of leaving avenues for peaceful coexistence, stating, “When you are coming down, the ladder may not be there. And leave the ladder too so that other people can also climb the ladder.”

The former governor, known for his influential role in state politics, metaphorically accused Fubara, once his political protégé, of disregarding established rules and undermining his authority. Drawing parallels with the role of an Oba, Wike emphasized that even a newly appointed ruler must adhere to traditional rules.

The underlying tension in Rivers State appears rooted in a power struggle between Wike and Fubara, both prominent members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Despite Wike playing a pivotal role in handpicking Fubara as his successor, reports suggest a fallout between the two over control of the state’s political structure.

The recent developments have not only strained the relationship between the political heavyweights but also heightened concerns among residents and political observers about the stability of Rivers State.

As Wike extends an olive branch, the hope is that his call for peace and reconciliation will be heeded, paving the way for a resolution to the political impasse in the state.
