APC Directs Rivers State Assembly to Commence Impeachment Proceedings Against Governor Fubara

The political landscape in Rivers State has taken a dramatic turn as the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a directive for the State House of Assembly to immediately initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Sir Siminilayi Fubara.

Chief Tony Okocha, the APC Caretaker Committee (CTC) chairman in the state, made this announcement during a press briefing held in Port Harcourt, the state capital, on Tuesday.

The directive comes amidst escalating tensions between Governor Fubara and his estranged political mentor, former Governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. With the majority of the 27 State Assembly members being loyalists of Wike, the move indicates a significant political showdown in the state.

Okocha cited Governor Fubara’s recent remarks regarding President Bola Tinubu’s intervention in the state’s political crisis, where Fubara reportedly dismissed Tinubu’s involvement as merely a political solution rather than a constitutional one. This stance by Governor Fubara seemingly irked the APC, prompting them to call for his impeachment.

Furthermore, Okocha warned that failure by the State Assembly to initiate the impeachment process would result in disciplinary action against its members in accordance with the relevant sections of the APC constitution.

The directive from the APC adds fuel to the already intense political climate in Rivers State, where power struggles and rivalries have been a defining feature of the political landscape.

As the situation unfolds, observers keenly await the response of both the State Assembly and Governor Fubara to this latest development, which could have far-reaching implications for the state’s political future.
