Nigerian Government through its minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu warns Against Community Purchase of Power Infrastructures

In a recent development, the Nigerian federal government has issued a stern cautionary message, discouraging communities from independently acquiring electricity infrastructures such as transformers, cables, and poles. Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, emphasized that it is the responsibility of Distribution companies (DisCos) to provide these essential components for effective power distribution.

During a courtesy visit to Oyo state governor, Seyi Makinde, at the Agodi Secretariat in Ibadan, Minister of Power urged Nigerians to refrain from purchasing power infrastructures and highlighted the government’s commitment to collaborating with the private sector to enhance power distribution across the country.

Adelabu, on a working visit to the state, conducted an inspection of power infrastructure and presided over the commissioning of a sub-station. The minister’s emphasis on DisCos’ obligation to supply necessary infrastructure aligns with the government’s promise to ensure effective metering for all Nigerian households.

Notably, Adelabu conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s disapproval of situations where communities are coerced into buying transformers, cables, and poles only to be charged by DisCos for services. The minister underscored that the current administration would not tolerate such practices and that it is the responsibility of DisCos to improve power supply.

Minister of Power Urge Nigerians To Stop Paying For Darkness

In a bid to address concerns about inconsistent power supply, Adelabu stated, “People should not pay for darkness. When people have a 24-hour power supply, they can pay double for electricity because you have saved them the money to power generators.”

He further encouraged heightened awareness of the security of power infrastructures and urged citizens to report any unusual activities around these facilities to appropriate security agencies.

This announcement reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring a stable and consistent power grid, making it clear that communities should not bear the financial burden of acquiring essential power infrastructures independently.
