Towards advancing research and innovation, the Federal Government has given the green light to the disbursement of N5,128,180,623 for 185 successful research proposals under the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) National Research Fund 2023 Grant Cycle. The announcement was made through a statement released by TETFund.

The approval, conveyed by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, follows the meticulous evaluation carried out by the TETFund National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee.

This committee recommended funding for the 185 research proposals after a rigorous screening exercise that began in March 2023, involving the assessment of 4,287 Concept Notes from prospective applicants.

Tetfund Research Grant Funds Breakdown

A detailed breakdown of the approved funds reveals that N3,784,635,923.00 has been allocated to the Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation thematic group.

Humanities and Social Science will receive N759,875,400.00, while Cross-Cutting themes will benefit from N583,669,300.63. Individual grants, ranging between N8 million and over N46 million, will be distributed across various research initiatives.

Notable research projects approved under the Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation thematic group include the application of the Hydro-Biogeochemical Framework for developing a National Rural Water Quality Assurance Plan, development and use of doubled haploid maize lines for improved yield .

The tolerance to armyworm, and the creation of an intelligent multichamber evaporative cooling preservative system for post-harvest storage of selected fruits.

Cross-Cutting thematic group projects include the utilization of scrap tires and plastic wastes as aggregate conductive material for renewable energy storage systems, the development of technology for producing aluminum alloy sacrificial anodes for Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Industry, and the creation of an economical low voltage programmable electroporator for investigating pulse electric field applications in wound healing and cancer treatment.

Under the Humanities and Social Science category, approved projects encompass digital financial inclusion, examining rural households’ consumption structure and well-being in Nigeria, ensuring equity and inclusion in accessing library resources for students with vision impairment in e-learning environments, and mitigating post-traumatic stress disorder among frontline Nigerian Army personnel through stress inoculation therapy.
