The military’s presence in Okuama followed the fatal attack on 17 soldiers by assailants suspected to be members of the community.

Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Acting Director of Defence Information at the Defence Headquarters, stated in a press release that the troops belonged to the 181 Amphibious Battalion. They were en route to Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State on a peacekeeping mission to Okuama community when they were ambushed and killed by youths from the community on Thursday, March 14, 2024.

“The unfortunate incident occurred when the troops responded to a distress call after the communal crisis between the Okuama and Okoloba communities both in Delta State,” Brigadier General Gusau explained.

He further stated, “The reinforcement team led by the Commanding officer was also attacked, leading to the death of the Commanding officer, two Majors, one Captain, and 12 Soldiers.”

General Christopher Gwabin Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), has ordered an immediate investigation and arrest of those responsible for the attack. The incident has been reported to the Delta State Government.

“The military remains focused and committed to its mandate of maintaining peace and security in the country,” General Musa emphasized.

While some arrests have been made, efforts are underway to uncover the motive behind the deadly attack.

The withdrawal of troops from Okuama underscores the complex security challenges facing certain communities in Delta State and the ongoing efforts by the Nigerian military to address them.
