The military’s presence in Okuama followed the fatal attack on 17 soldiers by assailants suspected to be members of the community.

Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Acting Director of Defence Information at the Defence Headquarters, stated in a press release that the troops belonged to the 181 Amphibious Battalion. They were en route to Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State on a peacekeeping mission to Okuama community when they were ambushed and killed by youths from the community on Thursday, March 14, 2024.

“The unfortunate incident occurred when the troops responded to a distress call after the communal crisis between the Okuama and Okoloba communities both in Delta State,” Brigadier General Gusau explained.
