According to data tracking websites, the app, launched by Instagram as a competitor to Twitter, has amassed over 100 million users in less than five days. This achievement surpasses the record set by the AI tool ChatGPT for the fastest-growing consumer app.

It took ChatGPT two months to reach 100 million users, while video-sharing app TikTok achieved this milestone in nine months. In comparison, Instagram itself took two and a half years to achieve the same feat after its launch in 2010.

Threads became available on the Apple and Android app stores in 100 countries on Wednesday, although it is not accessible in Europe due to uncertainties about complying with the European Union’s data privacy regulations, as Meta, the parent company, navigates this issue.

Twitter, estimated to have approximately 200 million regular users, has faced recurring technical issues since Elon Musk acquired the platform last year and laid off numerous employees. Musk, who also serves as the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has faced criticism from many users for introducing charges for previously free services and allowing banned right-wing accounts back on the platform.

While several competitors have emerged, most of them are niche platforms lacking the necessary scalability to challenge Twitter’s dominance.

Threads is experiencing greater ease due to its association with Instagram, which boasts over one billion regular users.

According to Quiver Quantitative, an online data service, the app surpassed 100 million users at 0700 GMT on Monday. Other websites, which track the number of “badges” received by Instagram users who have downloaded Threads, estimated that this milestone was achieved even earlier.

There have been claims of trade secrets and intellectual property theft between Musk and Meta, leading to Musk threatening to sue the company. However, Meta, which also owns Facebook and WhatsApp, has denied these allegations.

A rivalry between Musk and Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg has intensified, culminating in recent exchanges where they challenged each other to a cage fight.
