Former Governor of Bayelsa State and immediate past Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, has emerged victorious in the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primaries. Sylva secured a landslide victory, defeating Chief David Pereworimini Lyon, who was the governor-elect in 2019, as well as four other contenders.

On Friday, the direct primary mode was utilised to conduct the APC gubernatorial primaries in all 105 wards within the state.

The chairman of the APC Primary Election Committee and Returning Officer, Maj. Gen. A. T. Jibrin, retd, announced the results of the state APC primary election at the party’s secretariat on Saturday. According to Jibrin, Sylva emerged as the winner with a total of 52,061 votes. Chief Joshua Maciver, an ex-agitator, came in second place with 2,078 votes, while former Governor elect Chief David Lyon came in third with 1,582 votes.

Lyon, who was noticeably absent during the results announcement, was not accompanied by a representative.

Prof Ongoebi Etebu Maureen secured the fourth position with a total of 1271 votes, followed by Ogomade Isikima Johnson with 584 votes. Mr. Festus Daumiebi, who left the premises during the vote counting process, garnered 557 votes.

 

According to Jibrin, a total of 58,171 individuals were accredited and cast their votes out of the 142,031 registered party members. The challenging topography of the state was cited as the reason for the delay in the collation and declaration of the election results.

The official declaration was made by the electoral officer, stating that Chief Timipre Sylva had obtained the highest number of votes and was therefore declared the winner.
