The government of has sought to ease concerns over the recent removal of the fuel subsidy by reassuring Nigerians that the hardships experienced will be temporary. Information minister Mohammed Idris made this declaration during an interview in Abuja, highlighting the long-term benefits of the subsidy’s removal for the common man.

In his statement, Mr. Idris lamented that only a select few had been benefiting from the subsidy regime, leaving the majority of Nigerians bearing the economic burden. He emphasized President Tinubu’s commitment to standing with the majority, even if it meant facing initial hardships as a result of the subsidy’s removal.

The information minister compared the removal of the fuel subsidy to the pains of childbirth, where the mother, in the midst of labor, might wish she had never become pregnant. He stated, “However after the child is delivered, the woman will hold her baby, smile, and become the happiest woman in the world.”

He suggested that the same analogy could be applied to the fuel subsidy issue, expressing confidence that the initial pains would be temporary, but the ultimate outcome would be better for all.

Mr. Idris recalled that President Tinubu had taken swift action to provide palliatives to cushion the effect of the subsidy’s removal. Funds were allocated to the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory in the first few months of his administration. Additionally, assorted grains and fertilizers were distributed to help alleviate the immediate concerns of the populace.
