XpressVerify, which purportedly had unrestricted access to the NINs and personal details of Nigerians, faced mounting scrutiny after it was revealed to be monetizing the retrieval of NIN data from the National Identity Database. Concerns over data privacy and security intensified as reports emerged of the website allegedly selling individuals’ personal information.

The suspension of XpressVerify’s domain was initiated by Namecheap, the domain registrar through which the website’s domain was registered. This move comes in response to growing public outcry and investigative revelations regarding the unauthorized exploitation of citizens’ data.

Despite the suspension, there are lingering concerns about the potential accessibility of the website to some individuals due to a phenomenon called propagation, which delays the full effect of the suspension across all internet service providers.

In the wake of these developments, the Ministry of Information and Digital Economy, represented by Minister Bosun Tijani, has announced plans for the Nigeria Data Protection Commission to collaborate with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to investigate the situation thoroughly.

However, there is a pressing need for further investigation and regulatory measures to prevent similar incidents in the future and restore public trust in data management systems.

As the investigation progresses, Nigerians remain vigilant, demanding transparency, accountability, and robust measures to protect their privacy and secure their personal data from exploitation.
